The configuration management system is the collection of all tools, media, and procedures for accessing the configuration system. To establish the configuration management system, you must implement the configuration management access control policy in the configuration management tools, and ensure all configuration media is enabled for backup.

- Approved configuration management plan.

Establish Security Groups and Permissions |
- Create security groups in Visual Studio Team System and the project portal required to support the access control policy for each configuration item such as documents, code, unit tests, and builds.
- Enable version control on the project portal for any configuration items stored on the project portal.
- Assign permissions to each security group to support the access control policy for each configuration item.
- Establish access control for any configuration items outside of Visual Studio Team System, such as protecting forms in Microsoft Word templates.

Establish Check-in Policies |
- Add check-in policies to the team project as defined by the configuration management access control policy.

Establish Check-in Notes |
- Add check-in notes to the team project as defined by the configuration management access control policy.

Configure Media Backup |
- Configure backup of the project portal using the method described in the configuration management plan<TBD: Link to backup and restore options for WSS on web>
- Configure backup of VSTS<TBD: Link to Admin and Ops guide for VSTS>
